The Problem
Motherson’s Bendigo facility had widespread harmonic distortion across four separate main switchboards, creating a complex power quality issue that could not be resolved with a single-point correction system.
The distortion posed risks to equipment reliability, network efficiency, production uptime, and compliance with AS/NZS 61000 power quality standards. Traditional capacitor-based Power Factor Correction units was unsuitable due to the site’s high harmonic current from industrial loads, which could cause resonance, amplify distortion, and worsen equipment stress.
The site required a carefully engineered, board-specific solution capable of reducing harmonic distortion and correcting reactive power across all four switchboards without introducing the risk of resonance with the existing network.
The Solution
Quality Energy engineered a site-specific Static VAR Generator solution for Motherson’s Bendigo facility, with five SVG units distributed across four main switchboards. Together, the system provided 1,600 kVAr of total compensation capacity, sized and positioned to treat each affected area of the site independently.
The SVGs continuously monitor the electrical network and respond in real time, delivering precise, stepless correction as production loads change across the facility. This gave Motherson a dynamic power quality solution suited to the demands of a busy manufacturing environment.
Quality Energy managed the complete project from assessment through to handover, including power quality analysis , engineering design, SVG sizing, supply, installation, commissioning, performance verification, and support for the Motherson facilities team.
