The Problem
Sugar Australia's energy provider and on-site engineers identified the equipment used for processing sugar, including refining and packaging, was causing the company to have poor power factor, resulting in high demand charges on their electricity bills.
Sugar Australia contacted Quality Energy to provide a solution to reduce demand charges and ensure compliance. The large, complex and ageing site required extensive testing and critical upgrades to enable the installation of our equipment. Additionally, as the site operates 24 hours a day, meticulous planning around shutdowns was essential to ensure minimal disruption.
The Solution
As the site is fed from a high-voltage network, it was proposed that multiple low-voltage Power Factor Correction (PFC) units be installed at various locations around the site, specifically at their 11kV/415V transformers.
A 500kVAr and 2 x 250kVAr standard Power Factor Correction (PFC) systems were proposed, along with a 750kVAr Static Var Generator (SVG) to address the fast-acting nature of the electrical loads on one of their Main Switchboards (MSBs).
