Ballarat, Horsham, and Stawell in the Grampians Region
The Problem
Grampians Health distributed a tender for a commercial solar installation across six healthcare facilities in Victoria, awarding the project to Quality Energy.
Ranging between 32kW and 99kW systems, grid boards needed to be built for each site before solar could be connected and switched on.
Sites such as Horsham Hospital and Kurrajong Lodge presented complex roof geometries with multiple pitches and orientations. Array layouts were individually engineered to maximise generation across irregular roof areas while meeting structural requirements (certified to AS1170.2 for wind loading).
Several sites required temporary electrical shutdowns to safely connect the solar systems to the grid. In a healthcare environment — where uninterrupted power is critical — these shutdowns demanded careful planning, pre-approved shutdown windows, and rapid, reliable execution to minimise any disruption to clinical operations.
Every site remained fully operational throughout the installation. Coordinating rooftop works above active wards, nursing home residents, medical consulting rooms, and student accommodation required detailed scheduling, constant communication with Grampians Health's facilities team, and strict adherence to site-specific safety protocols.
Managing six installations across a regional footprint — each with different site contacts, access requirements, network service provider approvals, and commissioning timelines — required disciplined programme management. All six sites were delivered within a 6-month window.
The Solution
Quality Energy designed and installed six separate solar PV systems, ranging from 32.12kW up to 99kW. The systems were installed at:
1. Queen Elizabeth Village, Wendouree
2. Student Accommodation Building, Stawell
3. Horsham Hospital, Horsham
4. Alan Wolff Medical Centre, Horsham
5. Horsham Hospital Federation Building, Robinson Street, Horsham
6. Kurrajong Lodge Nursing Home, Horsham
Benefits and Outcomes
Key equipment
Risen Energy 440W N-Type TOPCon Monocrystalline Modules (CEC-approved) panels were used. These premium, high efficiency panels offer long term reliability with minimal degradation (0.4% after year one), maintaining >85% output at year 30.
All inverters are AS4777-2 2020 compliant and built for three phase power, offering up to 98.7% efficiency
29.9kW Sungrow inverter on smaller systems
110kW Sungrow inverter on larger systems
Sungrow smart meters were installed for grid compliance; with irradiance sensors for performance benchmarking
System size
Solar PV systems totalling 350kW were installed across the six locations:
1. Queen Elizabeth Village, Wendouree - 99kW solar installation
2. Student Accommodation Building, Stawell - 39.6kW solar installation
3. Horsham Hospital, Horsham - 79.2kW solar installation
4. Alan Wolff Medical Centre, Horsham - 32.12kW solar installation
5. Horsham Hospital Federation Building, Robinson Street, Horsham - 99kW solar installation
6. Kurrajong Lodge Nursing Home, Horsham - 99kw solar installation
