The Problem
Santos Limited, one of Australia’s largest independent oil and gas producers, was experiencing significant voltage dip issues at a mine site in the remote Cooper Basin, South Australia. These disturbances were disrupting critical infrastructure and threatening operational reliability across the network.
Complicating issues at the site, which includes Australia’s first large-scale onshore hub for the capture and geological storage of carbon dioxide (CO2), was the physical distance between motors and the proposed mitigation solution installation point – approximately 10-15km away.
The Solution
Quality Energy designed, manufactured and commissioned a custom-built 800kVAr Static Var Generator (SVG), along with a tailored Distribution Board (DB), to provide fast-acting dynamic reactive power compensation.
By rapidly supplying reactive power during motor start-up events, the SVG reduces kVAr demand, helping to limit the current spike and directly mitigating the associated voltage dips.
