The Problem

The plant's pumps, blowers, and variable speed drives were generating significant harmonic distortion, posing a risk to the reliability of equipment and control systems that operate around the clock. As essential community infrastructure, any unplanned downtime has direct public health consequences - making a robust, well-integrated solution essential. The project presented three key requirements beyond standard AHF supply and installation:

1. System Integration & Remote Monitoring: The AHF needed to integrate with the plant's local network and existing monitoring system, providing remote visibility of power quality performance without requiring manual on-site checks. This was a non-negotiable requirement for a facility of this nature.

2. Generator Backup Protection: Active Harmonic Filters must not run on generator power. If the site switched to backup generation (a real possibility at a 24/7 critical infrastructure site) the AHF needed to automatically shut down via a remote stop signal to protect both the unit and the generator. This safety interlock was a critical design requirement.

3. Custom Manufacture, Firmware & Future Expansion: An off-the-shelf active harmonic filter was not suitable. The AHF needed to be custom manufactured to a specific rating and configuration, with firmware customised by Quality Energy to meet the specific operational requirements of the site - including the local network integration and generator protection logic. The unit also needed to be designed to be expandable from 400A to 500A to accommodate future load growth without requiring a full replacement.

The Solution

Quality Energy designed and manufactured a custom 400A AHF to Price Electrical's specification, incorporating all integration and safety requirements from the outset. The firmware was also customised by Quality Energy to meet the specific operational requirements of the site - enabling the local network integration, remote monitoring, and generator protection logic to function seamlessly within the plant's existing infrastructure.

Following delivery and installation by Price Electrical, Quality Energy completed on-site commissioning including network integration, remote monitoring setup, remote stop function testing, harmonic performance verification, and full handover documentation.
