Western Australia

The Problem

A large iron ore producer in Australia contacted Quality Energy with an urgent requirement for a mining site in Western Australia. The facility was unable to commence full operations due to significant power quality issues caused by harmonic distortion on their electrical network.

Harmonic distortion, generated by the site's variable speed drives, rectifiers, and other non-linear electrical loads, caused the power system to exceed acceptable limits. Without correction, the site risked equipment damage, nuisance tripping, overheating of electrical infrastructure, and failure to meet the power quality requirements necessary to operate safely and reliably. A fast, proven solution was required, so Quality Energy was engaged to manufacture and supply Active Harmonic Filter units to a remote location, within a 4 week timeframe.

The Solution

Quality Energy sourced and supplied three Active Harmonic Filter units sized to the specific harmonic load profile of the site, providing a combined filtering capacity of 1,600 amps.

Active Harmonic Filters work by continuously monitoring the harmonic content of the electrical network and injecting equal and opposite harmonic currents in real time — effectively cancelling out the distortion and restoring the supply to a clean sinusoidal waveform.

Unlike passive harmonic filters , AHF technology adapts dynamically to changing load conditions, making it ideal for industrial sites with variable and complex electrical loads.

Quality Energy managed the procurement and delivery of all three units to the Western Australian site within the 4-week timeframe, ensuring the team had everything they needed to proceed with installation and commissioning without delay.
